Vater John Baptist Bashobora

When John was ten he entered lower seminary because he desired to be like Jesus. At the beginning he did not want to be a priest since he associated the profession with death. It was due to the fact that there were few clergymen in Uganda so the prayer was conducted by catechists, while a priest appeared in the village only to give extreme unction to the dying. As a result every time a priest appeared, someone died. John also bore in mind that he could not be a priest because his father (his uncle in fact) was a polygamist. He had a second wife. It was forbidden for polygamists’ sons to take holy orders. However, there found himself some sagacious priest who recognized John’s intelligence and wisdom and he gave John permission to enter higher seminary.

Since a young age John was close to Jesus. He used to treat Him like his best friend. He read the Bible and followed Its content. Following the example of Jesus he fasted for 40 days. In childhood he encountered two priests from Canada who had been working in Uganda and had already been involved in charismatic revival. The priests used to pray for the sick and preach the word of God wholeheartedly. Not until the Second Vatican Council did people not understand charismatics. Considering them to be Pentecostalists, Ugandans sent the two priests away.

No sooner had Fr John recognized his priestly vocation, than he decided to enter Saint Cross Congregation in Uganda and he went to India in order to be a novice. He did not take his vows there since he had already celebrated the prayer for healing. After he had returned to Uganda he was sent to Rome for studies. In Rome he gained a doctorate in theology and he received a master’s degree in psychology. He also joined the community of charismatic revival where he improved his knowledge of charismatic gifts. There John met people who made him possible to accept what God gave him and helped him to abandon himself to ministry.

On his return to Uganda John established his first orphanage. Since the number of orphans was increasing by the year he started to build houses and schools for them, not only to bring them up but also to give them an opportunity for a good education so as they would be able to manage on their own in adult life. At present, Fr John’s foundation takes care of 6 000 children. The great majority of them are orphans whose parents had died in the war or had died from AIDS. Not to mention the abandoned children or even the infants found on the waste heap. Children call him Father Bash. They come to him to talk about life, education, marital plans or just to have a hug.

Fr John Bashbora in Poland

For the first time Fr John came to Poland in 2007 at cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz’s invitation. He led the meeting in sanctuary of God’s Mercy in Kraków-Łagiewniki where the symposium Streams of Mercy was held from 27 to 30 September. The central idea of the meeting were the words: ” Kindle in our hearts the fire of Your love”. That all-Poland meeting was organized as a form of thanksgiving to God for the gift of fortieth anniversary of Charismatic Revival Movement in the Catholic Church.

Since that time Fr John is frequently invited to minister in our country. Many local bishops invite him to lead a charismatic retreat which enjoys great popularity. Wherever he comes, he preaches Jesus and leads people to establish a kind of personal relationship with Him by means of prayer in Holy Spirit. His preaching is accompanied by numerous conversions and healings, both spiritual and physical ones. Everybody is amazed at his humbleness and total immersion in God.

Sr M Tomasza CSC is a visit coordinator in Poland. Everyone interested in the retreat is requested to contact us by e-mail: stomasza@o2.pl.
